Ms. McWhorter’s 5th grade class is very excited to have the opportunity to participate in a Zoom meeting with Meg Lowman Ph.D., also known as, Canopy Meg. The class will be able to ask her questions and learn more about her mission. We have been reading about her and her amazing work in our reading series and the book, The Most Beautiful Roof in the World, Exploring the Rainforest Canopy, by Kathryn Lasky. This book describes Meg’s work in the canopies of the rainforests.
Meg is one of the world’s foremost “arbornauts”. In 1999, she co-founded and currently serves as Executive Director of TREE Foundation with the mission to link under-served children to nature and promote tree research, education, and exploration. In 2020, she launched MISSION GREEN — her vision and goal to build 10 canopy walkways in the world’s highest bio-diverse forests by 2025. She has worked in 46 countries across all seven continents. She has co-chaired five international canopy conferences; authored over 150 scientific publications; and authored/co-authored many books on forest science and sustainability.
Before our meeting we will be hosting a fundraiser to support her in her mission to save global forests and educate kids in other countries about trees, We have decided we will do a Penny Parade. We have also asked our Art teacher to help us create a "rainforest" in the entryway of our school and then for each student from our Pre K-5 building that donates a dollar, they will get to choose a rainforest related picture to color and place in the "rainforest". These rainforest related pictures will consist of some of the many plants, flowers, insects, and other living creatures that call the rainforest home.
